PROJECT SUMMARY |
Despite being the most environmentally friendly way of transporting large quantities of goods, maritime transport, like any other human activity based on fossil fuels contributes to climate change. This is even more true in MED ports, located in the proximity of populated areas, degrading local air quality on top of the emitting CO2. To change this, cooperation is central since not only are these issues common but they also need a shared approach, pollution and greenhouse gas emissions not stopping at borders. RENEWPORT aims to tackle this issue by supporting the clean energy transition of MED ports, turning them from emitters of pollutants and greenhouse gases to clean energy hubs by exploiting the untapped potential of renewable energy sources (RES). |

PPA SA ROLE |
In the frame of RENEWPORT, PPA will contribute to the development of the RENEWPORT RES toolkit, to help policy makers in planning their clean energy transition. Its main role however, is that of the end-user implementing a pilot activity and sharing common methodologies with others PPs for pilot evaluation. PPA is responsible to install a solar power production system on canopies located in their parking areas, including photovoltaic modules converting solar energy into electricity. The aforementioned quantities will be adjusted to the market prices available during project implementation. Not only will this pilot activity contribute to the reduced need for fossil fuels, reducing CO2 emissions and the related impact on climate change as well as the negative environmental impact of ships in urban areas, but it will also contribute to the joint development of a tool for ports as clean energy hubs, a solution replicable in other ports. |
