PROJECT SUMMARY

Ports are a great example of heterogeneous information hubs. Multiple stakeholders operate inside and outside them with different motivations and businesses. Although document and data interchange is already in place through Port Community Systems (PCS), the interchange is limited to official documentation and services of the Port Authority, such as custom declarations, import/export of cargo, and other formal documents. However, an effective integration of operational data is far from optimal in most ports, and especially so in medium or small ports, where budget is limited and IT services usually is outsourced.

In contrast, the available operational data (resources tracking, container status, vessel operations, surface or berth available, air/water quality measurements,…) is constantly increasing and technology is getting inexpensive and widely available. However, the application of such systems is still single-entity centric, since the information is not shared, keeping the real potential of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0 hidden. The same holds for geographic areas surrounding ports, where Smart Cities integrate various data systems and provide valuable services to citizens and authorities.

PIXEL will enable a two-way collaboration of portsmultimodal transport agents and cities for optimal use of internal and external resourcessustainable economic growth and environmental impact mitigation, towards the Ports of the Future. PIXEL will leverage technological enablers to voluntary exchange data among ports and stakeholders, thus ensuring a measurable benefit in this process. The main outcome of this technology will be efficient use of resources in ports, sustainable development and green growth of ports and surrounding cities/regions.

Built on top of the state-of-the art interoperability technologies, PIXEL will centralise data from the different information silos where internal and external stakeholders store their operational information.

The PIXEL concept

  1. Establish a single-metric index (PEI) to (i) integrate diverse environmental impacts of a port, (ii) provide an applicable environmental assessment tool and (iii) serve as a standardized and transparent metric for addressing the environmental impacts of port operations.
  2. Employ an IoT-based infrastructure to efficiently capture operational data and connect port resources, port-city actors and sensor networks
  3.  Aggregate, integrate and interoperate multi-source heterogeneous data in an automatic way
  4.  Model, simulate and analyse port processes in order to predict their environmental impacts and propose optimisation strategies
  5.  Demonstrate the applicability of the above approaches using pilot ports

The PIXEL objectives

  1.  Enable the IoT-based connection of port resources, transport agents and city sensor networks
  2. Achieve an automatic aggregation, homogenization and semantic annotation of multi-source heterogeneous data from different internal and external actors
  3. Develop an operational management dashboard to enable a quicker, more accurate and indepth knowledge of port operations
  4. Model and simulate port-operations processes for automated optimisation
  5. Develop predictive algorithms
  6. Develop a methodology for quantifying, validating, interpreting and integrating all environmental impacts of port activities into a single metric called the Port Environmental Index (PEI).
  7. Develop guidelines for mitigating possible environmental and health effects of port activities and develop evidence-based, standardized and cost-effective procedures for environmental monitoring in port areas

Piraeus port “Port-City Integration” Use case

Ports are key agents for the cities they co-live with. Actually, the economy of a port-city is sensibly tied to the evolution of the port, which normally boosts, with a tractor effect, the population welfare, growths on employment rates and the image of the city towards the community. However, sometimes this symbiosis can lead to unfortunate situations. Ports can be greedy components with regards to environmental impact. Dredging, traffic bottlenecks, noise, air pollution and other types of inconveniences are bounded to daily port operations. The impact of these effects towards cities and their citizens are trending topics that should be addressed in order to nurture (even) better relations among ports and Smart Cities communities.
Framed in achieving this new port concept in a very efficient way, PIXEL aims at achieving these objectives:

  • To share information and build integration synergies among the port, the city and the transportation actors
  • To fuse and populate into an online platform with all available information sources for environmental monitoring of port activities that can impact the city presenting in real time environmental measurements from a variety of operational areas (e.g. inferred emissions from the container handling equipment in the Container Terminal based on TOS feedings, inferred emissions from vessel operations, measurements from online sensors etc.)
  • To create a development strategy that meets the demands on transport in and around the port area while at the same time mitigating the negative impact on the environment and on specific social groups

Involved PIXEL ports are: Port of Piraeus, Port of Thessaloniki

POSTER

Most of the important dissemination actions of PIXEL will be carried out in congresses, fairs, technological workshops and similar events. PIXEL Consortium is expecting to hold a booth in some of them. Having communication support material to show PIXEL project in those scenarios seems crucial for the goals of impact creation of the project, being the poster one of the main tools used in this context.

rollupROLL UP

Similar to the poster, most of the important dissemination actions of PIXEL will be carried out in congresses, fairs, technological workshops and similar events. PIXEL Consortium is expecting to hold a booth in some of them. Because of this, having communication support material to show PIXEL project in those scenarios seems crucial for the goals of impact creation of the project. One of the main tools that will be used in this context will be the official roll up of the project.
