EUROPEAN PROGRAM - POSEIDON MED
On the 6th and 7th October PPA SA participates in the technical workshop with 17 other partners on behalf of the European Project POSEIDON-MED, which is the first European - Cross-border project for supplying ships with Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG Bunkering project) in the Mediterranean and the Adriatic Sea.
POSEIDON MED is coordinated by QENERGY Europe and is the first European cross-border project which aims to introduce LNG as the main fuel for the shipping industry and the development of an adequate network infrastructure supplying LNG and Natural Gas.
The project aims to design an integrated chain of ports for using LNG as fuel for ships, including the development of a network for the transmission and distribution of LNG, and the creation of a well-organized and sustainable market. The LNG is an attractive and cost effective alternative to the MGO and HFO while can contribute to a sustainable, cost effective, and environmentally friendly shipping industry.
POSEIDON-MED initially focuses on European Member States participating - Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia - and its ultimate goal is to prepare a detailed overall implementation plan to be adopted widely across the Adriatic and the Mediterranean region.
POSEIDON-MED aims to create an integrated network in the Eastern Mediterranean, the development of a sustainable market for LNG as a marine fuel, the revival of shipping in the region, increasing the competitiveness of the fleet, while providing significant environmental benefits, in line so with environmental regulations, and enabling easy compliance with the latest European Union directives.
As stated by the President and CEO of PPA Mr. Giorgos Anomeritis: “The port of Piraeus as a major center of the international shipping industry and one of the main ports in deep-sea ship supply, is expected to serve as the basis (energy transit hub) for the development of the network of the project supply chain. It is involved in a project aimed at 2020 with the contribution of all Port Authorities of the Mediterranean, the Adriatic Sea, shipping companies and others while the first phase (technical and economic analysis) has been approved by the European Commission (TEN-T) for financing under the MoS Multi- Annual work 2013.
